3 Steps to Apply Roof Coatings

1. Prepare surface before waterproofing

  • Make sure that the surface is clean and dry.
  • If the surface is quite smooth, it may be a good idea to lightly scuff back the surface to ensure that the membrane bonds well to the surface.
  • Remove all loose, scaling, peeling, blistering, chipping, cracking, chalking or gravel, dust, dirt, sand, soot, grease, oil, uncured tar, was, soap film, animal fats or petroleum based residue, coal tar, salts, efflorescence or any other chemically reactive substance (solvents)that may affect adhesion.
  • Wire brush or if needed high-pressure water blast should be used to thoroughly clean all surfaces prior to application if any of the above conditions exist.
  • Surface should be free of all mould, mildew or any other living organism & COMPLETELY DRY is preferred. However Liquid Rubber can still be applied to a slightly damp surface but this will slow down the curing process.

2. Detail joins before waterproofing

  • Once the surface is prepared, carry out detailing over joins, penetrations, corners, overlaps etc. by using Liquid Rubber base coat and polyethylene bandage.
  • Watch this video on how to use the Geotextile Bandage.

3. Apply Waterproof Coating

  • It is important that you apply the waterproofing products with nice even coverage creating approx. 1.2mm dry film thickness (DFT).
  • After detailing, apply an overall coating of Liquid Rubber over the area using brush/roller and let dry for about 24 hours.
  • Once the Liquid Rubber base coat has dried, go ahead and apply Premathane top coat in 2 layers allowing to dry between coats for about 24 hours.

4. Clean Up After

  • Well done, you have created a premium waterproofing barrier that should last you for years to come.
  • To clean up brushes and rollers, just wash under warm water. For dried product you can use engine degreaser or baby-oil. You can watch this video on how to clean up after application.
  • You can watch this video on how to clean up after application.
  • If you did the application on a non-trafficked roof the membrane is fine to leave as is.
  • If the Premathane membrane was installed on  a balcony, you should make the surface trafficable by either tiling (using water based glue), installing synthetic grass or installing floating deck (do not penetrate the membrane!).
