Waterproof paint is NOT the same as a waterproofing membrane.
- Waterproofing membranes and waterproof paint have a similar objective – minimizing the travel of water through a substance.
- However, there are major differences.
- The American Concrete Institute (ACI 515.1) defines:
"waterproofing as a treatment of a surface or structure to resist the passage of water under hydrostatic pressure, whereas damp proofing is defined as a treatment of a surface or structure to resist the passage of water in the absence of hydrostatic pressure."
- Waterproof roof paint does not have the durability, strength, protection, UV reflectivity, and waterproofing capabilities of a roof membrane.
- Paint cannot withstand the typical elements a roof endures - it becomes brittle and will peel, chip and crack.
- The polymers used in a waterproofing membranes allow for superior bondage, ensures durability and waterproof protection to structures.
- The elastomeric properties of membranes allow flexibility and ability to bridge over surfaces.
- Elastomeric membranes are impermeable to water, chemical vapors and subterranean gases.
